In addition to basic rules, including special piece moves, castling, and en passant, students will learn piece values for calculations and when/what to trade, good opening principles, defense, and basic checkmate patterns. Depending on the level of the students, they may also cover some basic tactics such as forks, skewers, pins, and discovered attacks. Students can reinforce learning at home by completing their ChessKid levels up through a minimum of Queen 2. The program provides a competitive focus and also teaches students to take chess notation, use a clock, understand the various ways a game can end in a draw, and follow all the rules and procedures of chess tournaments. Students are encouraged to attend HRCA weekend tournaments as a school chess team.
The one-time $25 registration fee includes a membership to Hampton Roads Chess Association good through August 31, 2026.
