  • Summer at the Cape: Camp Policies

    REGISTRATION 
    Early registration is encouraged! Camp sizes are limited. Registration payment must be paid in full no later than one week prior to participation in Summer at the Cape. You must register and pay for a full week of camp even if the child is not there the entire week. Your child is not considered registered for a camp unless full payment is completed. When registration payment is not received one week prior to the program's start date, Cape Henry Collegiate reserves the right to remove a camper from a Summer program roster. If registering within one week of the program's start date, payment must be completed upon registration. Your payment must be made at least one week in advance in order to determine if enrollment is sufficient. A payment plan may be established if requested in writing more than one week prior to the start of the program in which the camper is enrolled. Registrations must be completed online. Phoned or faxed registration will not be accepted.     CAMP CANCELLATIONS
    Cape Henry Collegiate reserves the right to modify or cancel any summer program with insufficient enrollment. All camps must meet minimum enrollment numbers no later than one week prior to the respective program's start date to proceed. If the Summer Programs Office cancels a program, a full refund will be given or may be applied to another camp.

    ABSENCE NOTIFICATION
    If your camper is going to be absent, please call and leave a voicemail message at (757) 963-8252. Please do not forget to include the date of the absence, your child's name, and the specific camp in which he or she is enrolled.

    REFUNDS, TRANSFERS, AND WITHDRAWALS
    A refund will only be permitted if requested in writing more than one week prior to the start of the session in which the camper is enrolled. Fifteen percent (15%) of the camp fee is nonrefundable within one week of the beginning of the session. Campers withdrawn less than three days prior to the start of camp are responsible for the full tuition. Transfers are permissible up to two weeks prior to the start of camp. There are no prorated fees or refunds for campers arriving after the beginning of the session, leaving before its completion, or missing any time during camp.

    HEALTH FORM
    In accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia law, each camper must provide Cape Henry Collegiate with a copy of the health form MCH-213G before the first day of their respective camp. The completed MCH-213G must include documentation of all age-appropriate immunizations and a physical examination. All documents must include the date of the physical exam, and the examining physician must sign the immunization form. This health form is required for enrollment in all independent and public schools. Children ages five and under are required to have the MCH-213G on file, and it must be dated within one year before the camp start date. Cape Henry Collegiate students do not need to submit this form for Summer Programs since it is already on file.

    REQUIRED SOCIAL SERVICES PAPERWORK
    The Virginia Department of Social Services licenses Summer at the Cape specialty and day camps, as well as, Extended School Day Program (ESDP). In accordance with the Social Services policy, we are required to document the identity and age of all children enrolled in these programs. Proof of your child's identity may include a birth certificate or a birth registration card. If your child is not currently an enrolled student at Cape Henry Collegiate, you will need to bring this documentation to the School before the start of camp. Athletic camps are not licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services and do not require proof of birth or Virginia School Health Entrance forms.

    MEDICAL
    There will be a Camp Nurse on campus from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital (SVBGH) is one mile from Cape Henry's campus. Severe emergencies requiring immediate medical attention will be taken to SVBGH either by car or ambulance. If a camper takes medication, a separate form will be sent to the parent for specific instructions and a doctor's authorization. This form and the medication must be given to either the Director of Auxiliary Programs or the Camp Nurse by the parent/guardian of the camper.

    LUNCH
    Lunch in the state of the art Café Dolphin is included in all full-day camps unless otherwise noted. If lunch is not included with the camp, you may purchase lunch for $30 per week. Students participating in AM and PM camps will have lunch provided by Cape Henry Collegiate. Please let shamainewilliams@capehenry.org know of any food allergies.

    FOOD ALLERGIES
    Cape Henry Collegiate cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment for students with severe allergies and is not a food allergen-free school. Our goal is to minimize the exposure risks to allergens, posing a threat to students, and educating the community about their needs. We ask all families to please avoid packing snacks with peanuts and tree nuts in the ingredients. Please contact shamainewilliams@capehenry.org for any food allergies.

    SPECIAL PICK-UP DURING CAMP HOURS
    Any child leaving camp during camp hours must be picked up in the Lower School Office by a parent, guardian, or family member. Advance notice is much appreciated. Please inform the Director of Auxiliary Programs and your child's camp instructor in writing/email of early departures.

    * Day-Camp Discount Packages are for campers who register for four or more full-day weeks of Day Camps. To be eligible for a discount package, a camper must be registered for a full-day Day Camp selection as well as Before- and After-Care. Registrations can be made for any weeks throughout the ten-week Summer at the Cape schedule. (Weeks do not have to be consecutive).

  • 2D/3D Design and Engineering

    Join Mr. Jonathan Torch for his brand new camp where students will learn how to model digitally in two and three dimensions. Using new modeling skills, students will make their designs come to life with a 3D printer and laser cutter. Several design competitions will take place throughout the week! This camp will be hands-on, digitally oriented, and push campers to collaborate in teams. Come get your STEM on at CHC this summer!

  • A Novel Idea (2 Sessions)

    Calling all thinkers, readers, and avid dreamers. Boys and girls who love books and words will long for this experience as we analyze, predict, and discuss the characters. If the book we choose has been made into a movie, we will spend our final day enjoying the film while drinking our fresh, "homemade" smoothies! If you like these activities AND creating crafty projects too, then join Ms. Elliott and bring a friend with you!

  • American Girl Doll Camp (2 Sessions)

    Do you love your doll and spend time dreaming of new ways to style and accessorize? Do you and your friends dream up new worlds with your dolls, creating tea parties, going to the beach, or catching the great new movie in the theaters? If so, this camp is for you. Make accessories, read stories, and learn all about the history of American Girl dolls. In this camp, you will design and build your own dollhouse using boxes and reclaimed materials, and you will find new, inventive ways to make accessories and enhance your doll’s fashion. Don’t have an American Girl doll of your own? Don’t worry! Any doll will do in this popular returning program, so join now!

  • Art Adventure Camps (4 Camps)

    Session 1: Art Adventures: Mason Jar Madness 
    Learn the excitement of Mason Jars in the world of Art! Spend the week creating beautiful works of art designed to spark the imaginations of your artists. You will have the opportunity to experiment with paint, clay, and focus your creative energy on the endless possibilities!

  • Babysitting (2 Sessions)

    Would you like to become a certified babysitter? An instructor from CPR Anywhere! will instruct boys and girls ages 9 to 14 in the skills of being a confident sitter. This three-day camp will instruct campers in childcare skills, including feeding and bathing a baby, changing a diaper, infant and child CPR, basic first aid, talking to potential clients, and much more. In the end, you will be awarded a certificate and card that you can show to prove you are a certified babysitter! Maximum of 15 campers at each session–so sign up early!

  • BlackRocket: Make Your First Video Game! (2 Age Groups)

    If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2D platformer game. Conceptualization, play experience, level design, graphics, sounds, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that we’ll explore. No prior experience necessary, just a desire to have fun. Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers, Mac versions can be created after the program for $15.00 conversion fee.  Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

    Are you ready to take your game design skills to another level? With Unity, an industry-grade design software, aspiring game designers will learn level editing, 3D modeling, impactful gameplay creation, as well as how to utilize scripts and variables. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

  • BlackRocket: App Attack (2 Age Groups)

    Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized app & game development tool, students will explore the world of web-based (HTML5) mobile apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of App publishing functions. Student-created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Publishing to App Stores not included. Students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take this class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

  • BlackRocket: Battle Royal- Make Your First Fortnite Style Video Game (2 Age Groups)

    Fans of Fortnite we need you! Instead of playing the game, design your own. Using a professional 3D game development software, build levels and assets inspired by popular battle royale games like Fortnite. Students can participate in eSports League matches against other schools across the country with a chance to have their levels featured in the Black Rocket master build of the game! This course includes cartoonish action and battle sequences. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

    For curious young minds who want to take the first steps into the world of programming. Student explorers will use their creativity to solve a series of web-based coding challenges. Each lesson builds fluency in essential digital skills needed for the future. At the end of the class, students will receive access to the interactive learning platform to continue their coding journey at home.?  Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

  • BlackRocket: eSports Apprentice- Streamers and Gamers (2 Age Groups)

    Whether you want to be the next pro gamer, streamer, or game caster this course will teach you the basics to get started! No longer just a hobby, eSports is the fastest-growing career for the next generation. Over 400 million people watched YouTube videos and Twitch streams of video game competitions this year alone! In this course, students will develop game-play skills and compete using Black Rocket’s eSports games and apps, learn how to produce commentary for live tournaments, use professional streaming software, and most importantly practice online safety. Student recordings will be available on a password-protected website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Videos will not be broadcast publicly but will be shared with all students in the class.

  • BlackRocket: Lego Films and Stop Action (2 Age Groups)

    Make your LEGOs come to life! Bring in your favorite action figures or LEGOs and create a short film with your friends. Whether you want to recreate a scene from Star Wars or design a world of your own, this class brings your dreams to the screen. Students will need to bring in LEGOs and/or action figures from home, but all other equipment is provided. Student-created films will be available on a password-protected website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

    Combine your two favorite activities: LEGOs and Video Games! Students will create their own LEGO characters and adventures in an interactive 2D Video Game. Everyone is welcome in this one-of-a-kind class. At the end of the program, every student will have a finished LEGO Video Game that can be shared with friends and family through a password protected Black Rocket website. Games are only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program for a $15.00 conversion fee. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.   • BlackRocket: Make Your First 3D Video Game! (2 Age Groups)

    In this Black Rocket classic, you will go well beyond the limitations of the traditional 2D game design classes and create an immersive 3D world. Students will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling the flow of gameplay, and storytelling. Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family projects are only compatible with Windows devices. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

    Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mods! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft.     Take the next step beyond simply “playing” Minecraft and become a true Redstone engineer. Expand your Redstone knowledge by constructing your own carnival with a variety of mini-games, roller coasters, and attractions powered by Redstone. Learn how to use Command and Structure blocks to incorporate them into your builds. Activate your skills and take your Minecraft structures to the next level! This new class combines game design concepts, coding, and fun! Young entrepreneurs will also learn how to navigate ROBLOX’s fast-growing marketplace to publish their games.     On your marks, get set, create! Blast off in making your first 3D Mario Kart® and Crash Team Racing® style game! Design your own tracks and customize your karts and characters. Using a professional 3D game development software, students will combine their creations into their own kart racing game that they can play with friends and family at home. Students can participate in eSports League races against other schools across the country with a chance to have their tracks featured in the Black Rocket master build of the game!   • BlackRocket: Virtual Reality- The Future is Now (2 Age Groups)

    Embark on an EPIC adventure in virtual reality! In this cutting-edge class, you will learn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments, and crafting memorable 3D experiences. At the end of the week, take home your first cardboard VR headset to show friends and family the new worlds you created.  VR projects can be viewed on a website or a mobile device. Students do not need a mobile device to take the class, but to use the VR headset a camper will need access to an Android or Apple mobile device. Students will work in pairs or teams and VR projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family.

  • Chesapeake Bay Adventure Camps (2 Age Groups)

    Back by popular demand of the Chesapeake Bay Adventure Camp. Junior Adventures provides an opportunity for our younger campers to see and experience the Chesapeake Bay environmental region in all of its glory. The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is the largest estuary in North America. Explore this unique watershed environment by both land and water through a variety of exciting outdoor adventures each day. Hike historic trails that buffer the land from the beautiful coastal waters; explore the local environment from the perspective of the newest, most environmentally smart buildings and programs in the world; and challenge yourself on the obstacles at The Adventure Park! Do all of this while learning what makes your backyard such a unique environmental treasure!

    Chess
    Absolute pin, battery, checkmate, dead draw, en passant? Confused? Don’t be! Learn the game of kings in a fun and relaxing environment. Chess is renowned for improving creativity, the power of concentration, critical thinking skills, memory and retention, and overall academic performance. Chess has also been shown to augment problem-solving capabilities, provide cultural enrichment, advance intellectual maturity, and enhance self-esteem. Not to mention, chess is fun!

    It’s time to whip up some fun and something good to eat! Campers will enjoy the opportunity to test their culinary skills while learning how to work in the kitchen, use measuring cups and spoons, and prepare healthy snacks and tasty treats. Creativity abounds as campers use their senses to create new dishes and tasty cuisine.   • Creative Writing for Middle School Students (2 Sessions)

    If you love to write stories or poetry, join our weekly group for creative writing activities and challenges.  Middle School writers will explore various prompts - fiction, description, opinion, and photo - and experiment with different styles of writing. During our last session, participants will be encouraged to display their best creative writing on the Middle School hallway bulletin board. Additionally, students will select pieces to share with the Cape Henry Community through a digital link in the Dolphin Digest.   • Dodgeball (4 Sessions)

    Join us for our ultra-popular program that includes several crazy, fun versions of the game dodgeball! The emphasis is on fun, teamwork, and exercise. This camp helps develop agility, speed, and good body awareness as well as powers of analysis and problem-solving skills. Campers will work on throwing, catching, and ball-shielding skills in addition to dodging skills, all while using new-coated foam dodgeballs. These balls are perfect for safe, FUN play! We supply all the equipment. Wear gym shoes and bring a snack and a water bottle.

  • Dolphin Bowling Camps (2 Sessions)

    The Dolphin Bowling Camp will teach the fundamentals of bowling from the traditional approach and swing to the release. Students will learn how to align themselves properly to hit their target, how to keep score, and the proper lane courtesy. Bowling teaches the life skills of teamwork and a stable mindset. This is great for introverted children. It is also one of the few sports that is an individual and team orientated sport. These coaches and volunteers are required by the United States Bowling Congress to have background checks before being able to work with youth. The coaching staff is co-coached by bronze and silver level coaches both with experience in collegiate bowling. Coaches include members of an NAIA collegiate bowling program as well as an NCAA D1 bowler and Alumni of Cape Henry. Bowling equipment is provided in the cost and all skill levels are welcome.

  • Dolphin Cheerleading Camp

    Cape Henry Collegiate’s cheer staff will guide campers through a week of instruction in the fundamentals of cheerleading. Participants will focus on proper stretching and safety strategies, cheers, chants, jumps, as well as learn an exciting dance routine. At the conclusion of the week, campers will electrify their parents, families, and fans in a spirit pep rally. The pep rally will showcase the variety of material learned throughout the week.

    Lights, camera, action! Do you want to express your creativity and become a trendsetter in the world of fashion? If so, whether you are a total beginner or have the experience, this is the camp for you! Campers use their imagination to brainstorm ideas and bring fashion to life. We will learn how to walk the runway, and we will discuss exciting topics about the latest fashion trends and icons. Campers will design their own T-shirt, purse, and so much more! They will be too busy hurling plastic bottles, planes, rockets, and more through the air!

    Cooking is truly an art form! We will explore not only the science of cooking but make beautiful creations that may be almost too pretty to eat!     Rock-It Science: Dynamite Dinosaurs
    Dinosaurs, everyone’s favorite extinct species! This year we will create the ultimate dinosaur swamp and go on a dinosaur hunt! We will work on creating a mini-prehistoric model with new miniatures to choose from and fun facts to learn about these fascinating creatures.

    Rock-It Science: Backyard Summer Camp
    Okay, so we won’t be in your backyard but this camp will be full of good, old-fashioned backyard fun! This year’s new labs will include mud pies and rainbow slime! We will finish up the week with a fun insect scavenger hunt. This will be a week of science, games, and art you won’t want to miss!

    Rock-It Science: Super Slime Camps
    Let there be slime! By far, slime is the most requested science experiment! What’s not fun about slime? It’s slimy, stretching, sometimes bouncy, and the coolest polymer around! Each day we will explore a different type based on all-new fun themes. We will do some cool art labs inspired by the day’s theme, too!

    Rock-It Science: Super Secret Spy Training
    If you missed out on this fun, adventurous camp last year, it’s not too late to get the training you need to earn your Super Spy Status! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to explore glow-in-the-dark science, go on scavenger hunts, and decode clues that lead to top-secret messages! Get those spy decoding notebooks out and be ready for some secret agent spy training as we sneak through obstacle courses and use our observation skills to figure out clues to a top-secret mystery!

    Rock-It Science: Outer Space
    What’s more fascinating than the great beyond? We will explore the solar system as we conduct science and art labs inspired by outer space. We will stargaze, go on moonwalks, and launch rocket ships! Keep an eye out for any asteroids soaring through space and get ready for a fun, out-of-this-world week! If you explored with us last year, join us again for all new art and science labs, including new additions to our space room!

    Rock-It Science: Treasure Hunting
    Get ready to perform tasks leading to daily treasures! New and classic daily themes including superheroes & Pokemon will keep us busy solving puzzles, experimenting, and collecting treasures. We will discover treasures all week and campers will design their own treasure chest to keep their valuables safe.

    Rock-It Science: Shark Week
    Today there are more than 465 known species of sharks living in our oceans. We will sink our teeth into interesting facts about sharks and create shark habitat bottles. Join us as we maneuver through a seaweed course, create shark art, and conduct experiments that will teach us about these beautiful ocean creatures.

    Rock-It Science: The Art of Cooking
    Cooking is truly an art form! We will explore not only the science of cooking but make beautiful creations that may be almost too pretty to eat! Galaxy cookies, dinosaur waffles, and veggie animals just to name a few. No need to bring a snack for this camp, we will do plenty of taste testing and decorate containers to take some home too!

  • Sylvan: Dolphin Tank

    During Sylvan’s version of “Dolphin Tank,” students' critical thinking skills will be put to the test as they brainstorm, create, and test their solutions to real-world problems!  The campers will learn and apply the design process of think, design, build, test and improve their own inventions. During the week, students will work in teams to invent a product that will benefit society and present their final product at the end of the week.

  • Sylvan: Makerspace Innovators

    Join the makerspace phenomenon where students gather to create, tinker and explore new concepts using cool materials! In this highly interactive, hands-on camp, your budding engineer will go on mini maker “missions" to explore science concepts like speed, motion, chemistry, gravity electricity, and sound. Each session has a clever theme-based challenge to inspire your child’s creativity! Get ready to set their imaginations soaring!

  • Sylvan: Radical Robotics

    During this hands-on half-day camp, campers will invent, investigate and explore the world of robots and simple machines. Campers will investigate the world of science with hands-on exploration of real-world environmental concepts using LEGO.  Students will use robotics to become detectives - investigating and answering questions about physics, life cycles, nature conservation and natural disasters.

  • Sylvan: STEM Vehicles

    This fun-filled camp is a MUST HAVE for the race car enthusiast. During the Radical Racers class, campers will explore and design 5 different race cars.  Campers will find out what makes them move and move fast! They will discover how race cars propel in different ways and decide how forces and design affect each car’s movement.

    Teen Studio: Darkroom Photography 
    Young photographers become dynamic designers with the medium of light as they explore black-and-white darkroom photography as well as digital SLR photography. This class will cover composition, pinhole and SLR cameras, shooting and processing 35mm film, enlarging prints, burning and dodging, photograms, solarizing, toning, hand-coloring, digital manipulation, and photo presentation.

    Teen Studio: Airbrush 
    Come explore your artistic side with the power of an airbrush at your fingertips! Working with an airbrush is a wonderfully exciting and creative experience. You will learn how to paint popular airbrush subjects like sunsets, seascapes, pillow hearts, space scenes, animal and people portraits, names and letterforms, flowers, and many other creative exercises designed to pull out the artist in you.

    Teen Studio: Ceramics 
    Artists will envelop themselves in the world of clay while learning the techniques and tools commonly used in ceramics. Students will create imaginative works using a variety of methods, including hand building, modeling, hollowing, extrusion and slab building, wheel throwing, press molding, slip casting, and glazing.

    Teen Studio: Oil Painting
    Oil paint is a beautiful and versatile medium. A painting foundation will be presented that can easily be built upon for pursuits beyond this class. Students will create a series of paintings with the instructor that will cover a variety of subjects and painting techniques. Drawing will be taught as it applies to the subjects illustrated. Students will work from life when we take a trip outdoors to paint, and they will learn ways to look within themselves for inspiration in more intuitive painting exercises. *A list of supplies for the camp will be sent out prior to the camp’s start date.

    Teen Studio: Art Explosion 
    Do you have an interest in the visual arts and look forward to trying new things? This Art Explosion class offers the opportunity to try techniques and media not typically offered in your regular art classes. This program will have you painting with light, using professional-style airbrush techniques, throwing on the potter’s wheel, and much more! 

    Dates: July 20 - 24 -AM

    Teen Studio: Digital Photography
    Students will learn the fundamentals of digital photography and computer-aided manipulation. This class will cover various modes of shooting found on most digital SLR cameras: exposure control, composition, motion and portrait photography, downloading, printing, Photoshop manipulation, and photo presentation. Students should provide their own digital SLR camera with a charged battery.

  • Theater for the Actor (Two-Weeks)

    This two-week program will strengthen the skills of the actor. We will focus on age-appropriate scene work, guided improvisation, voice projection, singing, and dancing. This invigorating camp will help performers fine-tune their confidence, talent, and creativity. On the last day, students will perform before an audience.

    Calling all Harry Potter fanatics! Join us for a week full of all things Harry Potter. Learn about the United Kingdom and create a map of Hogwarts. Make the potions of your imagination, create slime spells, design your own wand, and so much more. We will sort into houses and create our very own owls!
