Academics

Middle School

The Middle School years are a period of rapid growth and change for young adolescents, resulting in a great diversity of psychological, social, and physical development among the student body. As students progress from the teacher-guided experience in the Lower School to a more self-directed program in the Upper School, the Middle School program focuses on helping each individual student develop the knowledge and skills necessary to be confident, resilient, and successful learners and leaders within the community. To achieve this, the Middle School program emphasizes student involvement in critical areas that enhance adolescent development: rigorous and engaging academic study through both classroom studies and field experiences, opportunities to deepen physical and social well being through athletics and advisory programming, and creative opportunities offered by the visual and performing arts programs. In addition, students are exposed to various leadership and community outreach opportunities designed to deepen their understanding of and appreciation for the core values of community and integrity. This involvement, and accepting increasing responsibility for their own education, create the conditions for individual and collective student growth.

The Cape Henry Collegiate Middle School fosters an atmosphere in which knowledge means more than the accumulation of basic concepts, skills, and facts. Through a division-wide focus on the skills of time management, ethics, teamwork, creativity, curiosity, and resilience, students have the opportunity to explore the noncognitive skills that play a key role in developing a strong academic mindset and lay the foundation for success in the classroom and beyond. In order to meet both individual and group needs, the Middle School recognizes the value of utilizing multiple approaches in instruction while striving to instill an enthusiasm for learning.
