Academics

The Academic Center

Cape Henry Collegiate has long been in the forefront of progressive college-preparatory schools by providing support for students with varying learning styles and differences. These programs are offered to students, Kindergarten through Grade 12, through the Academic Center. Referrals to the Academic Center may be made by the Admissions Director, Division Heads, faculty, guidance counselors, and parents at any time during the school year. Daily instructional sessions are designed to meet the individual needs of each student. An additional fee is charged for students enrolled in the Academic Center, which is separate from the regular school tuition.

Lower School Academic Center Program
In the Lower School, the Academic Center staff provides reinforcement of basic skills. Students receive either one-on-one instruction from an Academic Center teacher, work in very small groups with an Academic Center teacher, or benefit from an inclusion model where an Academic Center teachers spends instructional time in the student's regular classrooms giving assistance to the student.

Middle and Upper School Academic Center Program
The Middle and Upper School Academic Center provides support to help students maintain the pace and rigors of a college-preparatory school.

In the Grades 6-12 Academic Center model, students are enrolled in one bell of self-contained Academic Center time. During this bell the students are provided with support in developing or strengthening the skills required to be successful in the classroom setting. This may include a focus on study skills, assignment completion, preparation for assessments, and other strategies needed for success in the classroom. Additional support or homework help may be offered during a student’s free bell or after school as needed.

Communication between home and school plays a critical role in the success of the student. The Academic Center teachers will provide bi-weekly progress reports to parents and will also consult with the classroom teachers to provide tools and strategies to help Academic Center students in their classes. The purpose is to strengthen each student’s specific areas of challenge, while allowing for growth towards independence.

Advanced Language Enrichment Program (ALEP)
Designed to support students for whom English is a second language in their transition to Cape Henry Collegiate. Students have daily sessions in small groups to enrich their English language development toward refining skills not only for core English classes, but also across the academic curriculum. It emphasizes grammar, writing, public speaking, test prep, and mastery of academic language. ALEP is geared toward assisting our international students in getting off to a strong start in their American educational experiences, providing a positive trajectory toward excellence in high school and in college admissions.
