Introducing the New Director of Diversity and Inclusion, Dr. Elsie L. Harold Lans
Brian Walker

Cape Henry Collegiate is pleased to announce that Dr. Elsie L. Harold Lans has accepted the Director of Diversity and Inclusion position and will start on July 1. The School started a national search for the position in the late fall. After meeting with students, faculty, staff, members of the Board of Trustees, and the administrative team, Dr. Harold Lans was selected as the individual to lead our continued work on diversity and inclusion.

Dr. Garran shared, “I believe Dr. Harold Lans’ leadership experience and commitment to diversity and inclusion will help us as we further our efforts to realize our mission. She is well-respected in the Hampton Roads community as a committed partner and thoughtful leader.”

Dr. Harold Lans previously served as the Executive Director for the Department of Student Support Services in Norfolk Public Schools. In this role, Dr. Harold Lans oversaw a team of eleven administrators and over 180 staff who focused on mental health, suicide prevention, and diversity, inclusion, and equity matters. Dr. Harold Lans became familiar with Cape Henry Collegiate when she participated in a public-private NEXUS program in Israel in 2017. From this experience, Dr. Harold Lans worked with Mr. Willy Fluharty to begin to build a community service partnership between Lake Taylor High School and Cape Henry Collegiate.

Dr. Harold Lans graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Hampton University, a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Troy State University, and with the degrees of Education Specialist and Doctor of Education in Educational Administration and Policy Studies from The George Washington University, Washington D.C. A self-described “global citizen,” Elsie grew up as a member of a military family and has lived overseas as well as across the United States. Being a part of a military household helped her to develop empathy for, and a commitment to supporting, people in new or uncomfortable situations. As an experienced administrator, she understands the importance of planning, communication, and execution. She has led challenging work around diversity and inclusion efforts and is eager to partner with faculty, students, and parents in the important work of furthering our mission.

Dr. Harold Lans shared that “I look forward to joining the Cape Henry Collegiate family as we lead innovation in diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
