CHC Opens Satellite Campus in Spain
Dr. Chris S. Garran, Head of School

In a year where we are focused on building community, I am excited to announce an innovative partnership between Cape Henry Collegiate and Gredos San Diego (GSD) International School located in the historic town of Buitrago, Spain. The partnership provides an overseas satellite campus for Cape Henry Collegiate students and faculty to immerse themselves in Spanish culture and language. Our Cape community becomes more global by building this bridge to the GSD school community and to the community of Buitrago.

I thank Mr. Willy Fluharty, Director of Strategy and Innovation and the Nexus Center for Global Studies, for all of his work in creating this tremendous opportunity for our students. As Mr. Fluharty shared, “GSD is the perfect partner for Cape Henry. We’ve been developing the concept of a satellite campus for several years, but we knew it had to be the right partner, the right program, and the right location.”

Gredos San Diego, as well as the town of Buitrago, offers enormous opportunities for not only the Middle and Upper School student community, but our faculty and staff as well. Our partnership with Gredos San Diego and our new satellite campus in Spain will allow us to more fully live our mission of graduating globally aware citizens.

Our students will live in dorms on a picturesque campus north of Madrid. With a quick walk, they will find themselves in a small, safe village with a beautiful square, castle, and church surrounded partially still by Moorish walls and overlooking the Lozoya River.

In June 2022, two initiatives in the partnership between Cape Henry Collegiate and GSD will begin. A group of Eighth Grade students will be the first to travel to the Buitrago campus, embarking on a two-week cultural and language immersion program in early June. After their return, members of the Varsity Boys Basketball team will depart for Buitrago to participate in the Gredos San Diego International Basketball Tournament, which will showcase athletes from six different countries.

Planning for the next wave of programming at the Buitrago campus features a four-to-six-week language and cultural immersion itinerary for Upper School students and potential professional development work for our faculty and staff at the executive training facility on the Buitrago campus.

By the Fall of 2023, Cape Henry Collegiate will be ready to send interested students to Buitrago for a full semester abroad. The program will allow full immersion for our students in an International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum taught in Spanish. CHC and GSD are also developing additional athletic opportunities for our students and coaches, including collaborations with Real Madrid, the Spanish football team.

Whether focusing on academics, professional development, or athletics, all programs based out of the Buitrago satellite campus will include travel opportunities in Madrid and throughout Spain.

This fall, in finalizing the partnership, Mr. Fluharty and I traveled to Spain and met with Mr. Jorge de la Calle, the General Director of GSD Schools. As he told us, “Cape Henry and GSD International School Buitrago: two schools, two cultures, melting together into one learning experience.” I am eager for our students to benefit from this coming together of communities.
