- Athlete of the Week
Spending much of the last week of the prior season memorizing the top times across the area, this week’s Athlete of the Week has his sights set on a Cape Henry Collegiate record.
Joining varsity cross country as an 8th grade student-athlete, Michael McKnew had already made a name for himself going into this season. Collecting two PRs and a gold medal in the first two races of his freshman season, McKnew is poised to compete daily for the Dolphins’ top racing slot, consistently pushing to be better all around.
“Michael McKnew came through with a dominating performance at the Catholic High School Invitational, winning the varsity race by more than 20 seconds. Mt. Trashmore is one of the toughest courses cross country CHC athletes face and Michael took the challenge head-on to conquer the hills,” Head coach Mrs. Kacie Voeller said. “Michael possesses great determination and an incredible work ethic, and we are excited to see him continue to develop his talent as the season progresses.”
Beginning the varsity cross country season with a 13th place finish in the two-miler, Michael quickly found his stride, capturing the gold in the first 5000m event of the year last week. Even more impressive, McKnew was the only athlete to finish the race in under 18 minutes, setting the tone for what Dolphin fans should expect from the freshman stalwart for the remainder of his cross country career.
Next up for Michael McKnew and varsity cross country, the Dolphins will travel to the Walsingham Academy meet at York River State Park on September 21 for a 3:30 p.m. start.
