Class of 2018: Marcus Jordan

By: Ms. Monica Smith, Upper School Counselor
Marcus Jordan arrived at Cape Henry as a freshman transfer from the Virginia Beach school system. He’ll be the first to tell you that the transition was not easy for him because he felt like he did not fit in with the other students. As a result, he closed himself off from his peers for the first few years. Becoming a member of the cross-country and crew teams helped him to finally open up and connect with classmates. These connections led to the discovery that he did fit in after all!

Now that Marcus is living his best Dolphin life, it is time to move on to the next stage of his educational journey. While he is looking forward to a new experience, Marcus recognizes that college will be both exciting and stressful. He’s looking forward, but can’t help but think about the people that he will leave behind. He has become friends with approximately 60% of the junior class, and he’s going to miss those friends next year.

Marcus says that he goes where life takes him, and next year life will take him to Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. What made this the right school for him? His answer is simple: the city, the campus, the people, the vibe make VCU the right school for him! He’s looking forward to the new experiences that college will provide, and he acknowledges that this is both an exciting and stressful time. Marcus plans to study Biology and wants to pursue a career in medicine. He would like to specialize in dermatology.

Good teachers are the foundation of Cape Henry’s English department. Even though he was not that great in English, Marcus recognizes Mrs. Kisa and Mr. Koeze as two of the best teachers that he had. His adviser, Dr. Perkins, is another teacher who positively impacted Marcus’s CHC journey.

To those coming behind him, Marcus says, “Don’t follow me!” He admits that he’s not sure how his high school journey and college process worked out, but he’s happy with the results.

For a young man who likes to go where life takes him to see how things work out, things are working out well as life takes him in the direction of great things!
