Frequently Asked Questions

List of 6 frequently asked questions.

  • What is the earliest age my child can get involved in athletics?

Grade 6. Students in Grade 5 and below do not participate in an organized interscholastic athletic program. Students in Prekindergarten - Grade 5 may participate in an Afterschool Enrichment Program.
  • Are all students required to participate in at least one sport?

Extracurricular participation is required in each year of Grades 9-12. This requirement can be met either through participation on a team sport or through participation in a drama production. Most recently, over 95% of the Upper School student body participated in athletics, many in more than one sport.
  • If my child is not a talented athlete, what are the chances of his/her staying in athletics?

Participation depends largely upon the desire of the individual student. Our participation statistics (see Question 3) demonstrate that there is a place in our program for any student-athlete who sincerely wants to contribute.
  • My child is talented athletically. What are his/her chances of furthering an athletic career at the college level after graduation?

Each year a number of Cape Henry student-athletes are recruited by various college athletic programs. Our graduates are currently participating in basketball, field hockey, soccer, swimming, lacrosse, and baseball at the collegiate level. The coaching staff, Athletic Director, and Director of College Counseling work together to facilitate college admittance for our talented athletes.
  • There is no question about the academic excellence at Cape Henry Collegiate. Does this excellence carry over into your athletic program?

Yes. We play a difficult schedule in all of our sports as a member of the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools. Our teams are well-equipped and our playing fields and facilities are among the finest in our conference. Our coaching staff is dedicated, experienced, knowledgeable, and professional. The majority of our coaches also teach here at Cape Henry Collegiate. We experience a high degree of competitive athletic success; yet we do not measure the excellence of our athletic program in terms of wins and losses. Cape Henry Collegiate has been awarded the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools Sportsmanship Award on three separate occasions.
  • How many different sports do you offer and what are they?

We field varsity, junior varsity and in some sports junior/junior varsity or middle school teams in the following girl’s sports: Basketball, Cheerleading, Soccer, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Tennis, Swimming, Volleyball, Softball, Track, Crew, Golf, Dance, and Lacrosse. For boys we offer the following sports at the varsity, JV and in some cases JJV and middle school teams: Cross Country, Soccer, Volleyball, Swimming, Wrestling, Basketball, Tennis, Track, Baseball, Golf, Lacrosse, Dance, and Crew.
