Service Learning

The Cape Henry Collegiate Service-Learning Program is designed to give students the knowledge and skills necessary to become socially responsible and active citizens within their local and global community. Specific goals include:
  • Giving students the opportunity to solve real-life problems and make meaningful contributions to the School, local, and global communities.
  • Engaging students in learning and applying skills for personal and social responsibility.
  • Helping students to discover and identify new interests, abilities, and opportunities now and for the future.
  • Reinforcing the values of our character education program in the following ways:
    • Self-Discipline: persevering to achieve goals and exercising self-restraint
    • Respect for Others: being thoughtful about and tolerant of the needs, beliefs, and feelings of others
    • Kindness: showing care and concern for others
    • Responsibility: setting a good example, using good judgment, making wise decisions, keeping promises, being dependable, and taking responsibility for actions
    • Trustworthiness: being honest, truthful, fair, and loyal
    • Service: making a difference in the lives of others
    • Courage: standing up for one’s values and showing determination to face hardship
    • Citizenship: helping one’s community by volunteering service
  • Promote understanding and appreciation of diversity in the classroom, the School, and the broader community.
  • Strengthen for our students the local network of adult support–family, school, community.
In the Lower School, students are actively introduced to the challenges and needs of our local and global community through classroom education and special presentations throughout the school year. Grade-level, service-learning projects are designed to give students the opportunity to connect their learning with community activism. Projects include the Lower School Turkey Toss, the CHC Adopt-a-Family program, and Coats for Kids drive, and participation in Operation Smile World Tour Day and Puppet Making.

In the Middle School, partnerships with area organizations allow students to become active volunteers in the service-learning process. In Grade 6, students connect their study of environmental sustainability and the Chesapeake Bay to work with the City of Virginia Beach as well as helping to maintain the CHC garden. In Grade 7, thematic studies of personal sustainability, empathy and kindness provide the foundation for a buddy program with Alanton Elementary School. And, in Grade 8, students volunteer at Union Mission Ministries Homeless Shelter as well as spend their Winterim week focused on the roots of homelessness and hunger and ways to help.

In the Upper School, student interests and passions guide the service-learning program as students participate both individually and collectively in outreach projects in the Hampton Roads area and around the world. Fall and spring service days in the Upper School provide students with the opportunity to adopt a project as a class and work collectively in service with the organization of their choice. Through the Nexus Global Studies Program, students have the opportunity to learn about the deep and varied community needs around the world, as well as work in service to those communities as a part of the Nexus field experience. The Cape Henry Collegiate capstone experience, or Senior Project, encourages soon to be graduates to invest their time and energy pursuing a topic of interest in service to others. Nexus and Senior Project experiences have included work with Habitat for Humanity on the Eastern Shore, community projects with the Roots of Music program in New Orleans, building irrigation systems and freshwater resources to third-world countries, work with the Cheetah Conservation Program in Africa, partnership with Malambo Orphanage in Panama, and many more.
